It started in 1997 at 603 Markham Street at True Grits Restaurant (which closed its doors in 2000). Wini, our bartender, got “Doug” as a present from Southern Accent’s Chef Elena Embrioni.

Because he looked so real, Doug started out as a gag for our customers to have their picture taken with him and go on their holidays.

The Travelling Doug went to many places, was written-up in the National Post, and was invited to appear on CityTV’s Breakfast Television. His last trip was in February 2005 when Frances Wood, part owner of Southern Accent, took Doug to Belize to see Wini.

New photos were taken of Doug on a catamaran, snorkeling, and in Wini’s sail repair workshop.

He’ll soon be off again… who knows where?

Doug has a photo corner at Southern Accent with many famous people and places as a result of Richard Crouse’s Reel to Reel interviews.

Doug’s Current Whereabouts…

Finally back on his shelf above the bar, Doug had a whirlwind visit to Europe. Talk about the lap of luxury…he swung from the chandelier at Rome’s Excelsior Hotel on the Via Veneto. Then off on a cruise aboard the Regent Seven Seas Voyager visiting Sorrento, Portofino, Livorno, St Tropez, Port Mahon, Nice and Monte Carlo.

Come by the Restaurant to see his new photos. He misses his Butler and Maid from the cruise ship.
